INDIA GENERAL SERVICE 1854-95, CLASP, PEGU ‘CAPT. G. F. SALMON. 30TH. REGT. M.N.I.’

George Frederick Salmon was born in Sandbach, Cheshire in 1817 and was commissioned Ensign in the Honourable East India Company’s Forces on 4 October 1836. Appointed to the 30th Madras Native Infantry, he was promoted Lieutenant on 8 October 1839 and Captain on 2 October 1843. He saw active service in the Second Burmese War, 1852-1853. Promoted Major on 24 March 1854 and Lieutenant-Colonel on 25 October 1859, he took command of the 29th Madras Native Infantry on 11 November 1860, exchanging into the 9th Madras Native Infantry, in command, on 5 February 1861. He retired on full pay, with effect from 31 December 1861, and was advanced Colonel on the Retired List in March 1862. He died in Southsea, Hampshire, on 11 October 1889.
