Trooper John Robert Lewis served in the Lydenburg Rifles during the Sekukuni campaign of 1879.
Captain Corrie of the Lydenburg Rifles was the author of the book, The Promised Land, 1884. In it he gives a graphic account of the Second Campaign of the Second Sekukuni War (1879) and of the assault on the Sekukuni’s Stad, 28 November 1879, in which the Lydenburg Rifles took a prominent part.

Condition NVF. EK’s, traces of brooch mounting to obverse which has been cleaned up very well and first initial engraved with ‘X’ over it.
A scarce medal to this mounted unit.
