Trooper J. Adams served with the Northern Border Police Force during the campaigns of 1878-9.
The Northern Border Police was formed in 1873 but in 1877 the corps became No8 Troop, Frontier Armed and Mounted Police. Partly composed of Coloured men and disbanded in 1879, the Europeans going to the C.M.R. They served in the Ninth Frontier War (Ngqika and Gcaleka) War 1878. Killed in action and their Adjutant was killed in an engagement with the Korannas, on the Orange River, April 1879.The unit often seem to have been called the Northern Border Horse in contemporary sources.
Medals to the unit are scarce, just 56 medals being issued, of which 26 were returned. Two men of this rank, initial and surname are confirmed on the medal roll; Trooper Jan Adams, and Trooper John Adams, each with the same clasp entitlement.
