AFGHANISTAN MEDAL

A RARE AFGHANISTAN 1879 AND 1ST BOER WAR 92ND HIGHLANDERS CASUALTY MEDAL TO A PRIVATE WHO WAS WOUNDED IN ACTION AT THE BATTLE OF CHARASIAH 6 OCTOBER 1879 AND FOR A SECOND TIME AT MAJUBA HILL ON 27 FEBRUARY 1881 DURING THE 1ST BOER WAR

AFGHANISTAN, 1878-80, 3 CLASPS, CHARASIA, KABUL, KANDAHAR (B/323. PTE. D. SIMPSON. 92ND HIGHRS’.

323 Private Daniel Simpson, 92nd (Gordon) Highlanders, was wounded in action at the Charasiah on 6 October 1879, when he received a bullet to the right ankle. He was one of 3 men of the 92nd wounded at this battle, a further 3 being killed. Recovering from his wounds, Simpson served throughout the rest of the Afghan war and would go on to serve with his regiment during the 1st Boer War. Simpson was wounded for a second time at the battle of Majuba Hill, 27 February 1881. Of the 141 Officers and men of the 92nd Highlanders who took part in the battle, 34 Officers and men were killed in action, with 12 subsequently dying of wounds, and 52 were wounded.
