SOUTH AFRICA 1834 ‘**T J. MILNE 72ND REGT’

John Milne, a labourer from Old Machar, Aberdeen, enlisted into the 72nd (Duke of Albany’s Own) Highlanders on 2 July 1824. He served in the Cape of Good Hope for 11 years, 11 months, taking part in the 1st Kaffir War of 1834-6, having been promoted Sergeant on 25 January 1835. Having reached the rank of Colour Sergeant, he was discharged to serve on the Staff of the Royal Berkshire Militia on 14 October 1852.

Approx 139 medals were awarded to the 72nd Regiment for their action during the Kaffir wars.

Condition NVF, erasure to first letters of rank and contact wear. With Copy service papers (digital). Less than 400 medals in total were issued to British units who fought during the 1st Kaffir War. Thus scarce.
