SOUTH AFRICA 1877-79, CLASP 1878 ‘PTE L. MOORE. GEORGE MTD VOLS’.
Private Lawrence Moore served with the George Mounted Volunteers during the 1878 campaigns.
Raised in 1878 in Barkly West District, near Kimberley, for the campaigns in Bechuanaland or the Northern Border War. The Rangers saw action in Commandant Ford’s column in July 1878, including an engagement at Takoon at the end of the month. During the campaign, they lost 5 Officers/men killed and an unknown number wounded; a large number for such a small unit.
Just 27 medals issued to the George Mounted Volunteers, all with the 1878 clasp, 17 of which were returned unissued. Thus rare.
Condition GVF and rare.
