SOUTH AFRICA 1877-79, CLASP 1878 ‘SGT G. A. TAPSCOTT. BARKLY RANGS’.

Sergeant George Arthur Tapscott Barkley Rangers.

Raised in 1878 in Barkly West District, near Kimberley, for the campaigns in Bechuanaland or the Northern Border War. The Rangers saw action in Commandant Ford’s column in July 1878, including an engagement at Takoon at the end of the month. During the campaign, they lost 5 Officers/men killed and an unknown number wounded; a large number for such a small unit.

64 medals issued to Barkley Rangers, all with the 1878 clasp, 38 of which were returned unissued. Thus very scarce.

Condition GVF.
