SOUTH AFRICA TO AN OFFICER OF THE 6TH FOOT AND SON OF THE 2ND BARON LANGFORD, WHO SERVED IN SEVENTH CAPE FRONTER WAR 1846-7, LATER HIGH SHERIFF OF COUNTY MEATH AND HONORARY COLONEL 5TH BATTALION LEINSTER REGIMENT

SOUTH AFRICA 1835 ‘ENSIGN HON. H. L. ROWLEY 6TH REGT.’

The Honourable Hercules Langford boyle Rowley was born on 19 June 1828, the Son of Hercules Langford Rowley, 2nd Baron Langford of Summerill, Co Meath. He was commissioned Ensign in the 6th foot (Royal Warwickshire) on 29 November 1845 and served with this Regiment during the seventh Cape Fronter War 1846-7.

Purchasing the rank of Lieutenant in the 6th Dragoons, 8 October 1847 and Captain in 1853, he retired in 1854. Appointed Major in the Royal Meath Militia (later became the 5th Battalion Leinster Regiment), 11 July 1859, Lieutenant Colonel 11 August 1875 and Honorary Colonel 5th Battalion Leinster Regiment, 25 October 1890. He also held the office of both Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant and served as High Sheriff of county Meath 1859-60.
