ARMY OF INDIA 1799, CLASP, AVA ‘WM. THOS. BARTON, MARINE’ SHORT HYPHEN REVERSE, OFFICIALLY IMPRESSED NAMING

William Thomas Barton served as a Royal Marine aboard H.M.S. Ganges from 27 October 1823 until 6 November 1823. His further service was as follows:

16 January 1824 – 31 January 1824, H.M.S. Ranger
18 June 1824 – 7 December 1828, H.M.S. Champion (Burma War)
3 September 1830 – 9 January 1834, H.M.S. Rainbow
27 July 1835 – 18 April 1837, H.M.S. Excellent
20 April 1839 – 14 November 1841, H.M.S. Britannia
17 December 1841 – 8 November 1842, H.M.S. St Vincent

After service aboard H.M.S. St Vincent, he was discharged ‘in consequence of length of service and at his own request’. He character was noted as excellent.

Just 306 Army of India 306 medals issued to the Royal Navy, with just 8 medals issued to non Officers of H.M.S. Champion, this being the lowest number issued to any ship entitled to the Ava clasp.

Condition; couple of EK’s at 4 and 5 o’clock, lovely patina and a scarce medal. Ex Needes 1940.
