INDIAN MUTINY 1857, CLASP LUCKNOW ‘EDWD BAILEY, ORD. SHANNON’

Edward Bailey was born in Pimlico, London on 21 March 1839 and entered the Royal Navy aboard H.M.S. Banshee as a Boy 2nd Class on 13 April 1855. Aboard Banshee during the Crimean War, he served on this ship until 27 August 1856; the following day his joined H.M.S. Shannon. Serving, initially as a Boy 1st Class, he was rated Ordinary Seaman on 28 August 1856 and served with Shannon’s naval brigade during the Indian Mutiny.

He left Shannon on 15 January 1859 and from the next day was on the books of H.M.S. Victory as a supernumerary until 2 March 1859, after which his service has not been traced. However the medal roll notes his Mutiny medal was sent to ‘Algiers’ on 22 May 1861.
