James Broom was born in Torquay, Devon on 24 September 1883 and entered the Royal Navy on 23 June 1898. Served H.M.S. Canopus, Mars, Defence, Lion, Crescent and Hood, being one of the commissioning crew on the latter. Served aboard H.M.S. Lion 1912-20, including the battle of Jutland. Pensioned as C.P.O. in 1921. Went back to Torquay and worked as jobbing Gardener, passing away in 1938, aged 56
