A FINE GROUP OF BOER WAR ‘ROUGH RIDERS’ DOCUMENTS AND PHOTOGRAPHS RELATING TO PRIVATE IN THE 20TH (CITY OF LONDON) BATTALION, IMPERIAL YEOMANRY WHO WAS LATER COMMISSIONED INTO THE 36TH BATTALION IMPERIAL YEOMANRY

Albert Montague Holden, a 20 year old Draughtsman from London and Middlesex RE Volunteer, enlisted 72nd Company of 20th (City of London) Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry, better known as the ‘Rough Riders’, on 7 March 1900. He served in South Africa during the Boer War from 14 April 1900 but was sent to England sick on 21 December 1900 and attached to the 1st Pov Battalion but discharged from service on 12 April 1901 having been found medically unfit. However, in January 1902 he received a commission of Lieutenant, 36th Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. It is not clear whether he went back to South Africa or not. During the Great War he served as a Captain in the Middlesex Regiment, serving in France from 30 July 1915.

14502 Private A M Holden was entitled to the Queens South Africa Medal with 3 clasps and the Great War trio and Silver War Badge.

k) A pencil sketch of the ‘Rough Riders’ camp at Maitland, South Africa
