A SCARCE VICTORIA CROSS CABINET CARD OF LIEUTENANT HERBERT MACPHERSON WHO WAS AWARDED THE VICTORIA CROSS FOR ACTIONS DURING THE INDIAN MUTINY AT THE SIEGE OF LUCKNOW, IN WHICH HE SET A HEROIC EXAMPLE OF GALLANTRY BY CAPTURING TWO BRASS NINE-POUNDERS AND THE POINT OF THE BAYONET

“For distinguished conduct at Lucknow, on the 25th September, 1857, in setting an example of heroic gallantry to the men of the regiment, at the period of the action, in which they captured two brass ninepounders at the point of the bayonet.”

Herbert Taylor MacPherson (1827-1886) was born on 27th January 1827 in Ardersier, Inverness-shire, the son of Colonel Duncan MacPherson. Herbert enlisted with the Army in 1845, and one of his first regiments was his father’s, the 78th Ross-shire Buffs. He became a Lieutenant in 1847 and saw his first military service in the Expedition to Persia, and was present in the night attack in the Battle of Kooshab and the bombardment of Mohummerah 1856-1857……………
