A SCARCE VICTORIA CROSS CABINET CARD OF LIEUTENANT MARK WALKER WHO WAS AWARDED THE VICTORIA CROSS FOR ACTIONS DURING THE CRIMEAN WAR IN WHICH HE JUMPED OVER A WALL IN THE FACE OF TWO BATTALIONS OF RUSSIAN INFANTRY TO RALLY HIS MEN

“For having, at Inkermann, distinguished himself in front of his Regiment, by jumping over a wall, in the face of two battalions of Russian infantry, which were marching towards it, for the purpose of encouraging his comrades by his example to advance against such heavy odds, which they did, and succeeded in driving back both Battalions.”

Sir Mark Walker (1827-1902) was born in Finea, County Westmeath, Ireland on 24th November 1827, the son of Captain Alexander Walker, who was a distinguished officer who served in the Peninsular Wars. Mark was educated at Portarlington, and was gazetted to the 30th Regiment of Foot as an Ensign on 25th September 1846. He served throughout the Crimean Campaign as Adjutant for the 30th Regiment of Foot from 30th December 1854 to 14th May 1855………..
