J/9369 Flight Lieutenant Richard ‘Dick’ Alvin Campbell, Royal Canadian Air Force, of Assiniboia, Saskatchewan Canada, was killed piloting Mosquito HX821 of 45 Squadron, Royal Air Force on 10 October 1944.

Returning from a flight with Navigator, F/Lt. (Engineer) Douglas Rimell, RAFVR, they had a catastrophic bird strike at 8000 feet. The bird (believed to be a Vulture) hit the Port Wing. The wooden Mosquito broke up in the air and, unable to bail out, Campbell and Rimell (aged 28) went down in the remains of their aircraft and crashed. They were found in the wreckage and taken for burial beside each other at Delhi War Cemetery.

With 45 Squadron, Campbell piloted Vultee Vengeance dive bombers in Burma, prior to converting to Mosquitos in February 1944. Online research indicates he may not have been entitled to the Africa Star, though his squadron had previously served in Africa.

Sold with copy research which includes various photographs and other detailed information.
