Mary Elizabeth Johnston was commissioned Assistant Section Officer on Probation (8503) in ‘G’ Branch, Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) on 3 October 1945, this rank confirmed on 19 February 1948, with seniority 3 October 1945. ‘G’ Branch being the telecommunication and coding branch. She was promoted to Flying Officer (temporary) Women’s Royal Air Force (WRAF), 9 March 1949, with seniority 3 October 1947.

Promoted from Flying Officer to Flight Officer (407566), Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service, on 8 July 1961 and to Squadron Officer (equivalent to Squadron Leader) on 15 November 1969. Her name in the London Gazette, 25 November 1969, with the letters ‘SRN’ and SCM’ after her name; State Registered Nurse and State Certified Midwife. These being professional qualifications acquired during her R.A.F. service.

It is not clear when Squadron Leader Johnson retired from the Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service.

Condition NEF, Sold with copy gazettes (digital). A scarce R.A.F. nurses group.
