THE MILITARY GENERAL SERVICE AND WATERLOO PAIR TO A GUNNER OF ‘E’ TROOP, ROYAL HORSE ARTILLERY WHO SERVED IN THE PENINSULAR FRANCE AND BELGIUM, 1811-16

James Gibb was born in Cairnie, Aberdeenshire on 6 November 1780 and enlisted into the Royal Horse Artillery as a Gunner on 27 April 1808. Initially serving with Captain Dickson’s Company, 10th Battalion, Royal Artillery, he transferred to Captain Robert McDonald’s ‘E’ Troop, Royal Horse Artillery in August 1808. Initially based in England, he served in the Peninsular and France from August 1811, the Troop serving with the 7th Division and later the Hussar Brigade. In April 1813, Major Robert Gardiner took command of ‘E’ troop. Returning the England by July 1814, he was in Belgium from May 1815 and took part in the Waterloo campaign, still with Major Gardiner’s ‘E’ troop.

Returning to England in January 1816, he was discharged on pension, 1 November 1818. Gibb died in Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire on 27 April 1861, aged 81. Noted as a Crofter and former soldier.

Condition, Waterloo, replacement clip and ring suspender, ‘J’ of forename erased when clip replaced, EK to reverse head, otherwise VF or better, MGS GVF. Sold with a quantity of copy research including detailed muster/pay lists and genealogical transcripts.
