A WW2 RAF 221 SQUADRON GROUP AWARDED TO A SERGEANT WHO’S WELLINGTON WENT MISSING IN ACTION DURING A SHIPPING STRIKE ON 5/6 JUNE 1942. SOLD WITH HIS FATHERS WW1 MEDALS AND A LARGE AMOUNT OF PAPERWORK ETC RELATING TO THE LATTER WHO WAS A LONG SERVING GRENADIER GUARD MAJOR

BRITISH WAR AND VICTORY MEDALS ‘10317 SJT. S. A. EVANS. G. GDS.’, DEFENCE MEDAL 1939-45, THESE MOUNTED FOR WEAR. IN NAMED CARD BOX OF ISSUE AND UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR ENCLOSURE. ALONG WITH THE RECIPIENTS MOUNTED MINIATURE MEDAL PAIR.

Sergeant Guy Alfred Evans was one of the crew of Wellington HX634, engaged on an operational shipping strike when their aircraft went missing. Wellington’s of 221 Squadron were engaged in reconnaissance, strike missions and anti-submarine patrols over the Mediterranean. Evans and the rest of the crew are remembered on the Alamein Memorial.

Major Sidney Alfred Evans joined the Grenadier Guards in 1902. During the Great War he served in France between September 1916 and 6 August 1917, having been wounded in action on 28 July 1917. He was back in France between April 1918 to February 1919. How and when he was commissioned and reached the rank of Major is unresearched.

Condition GVF. With above mentioned original documents etc and copies of his fathers service papers and 221 Squadron log for the period Evans went missing.
