Sir Albert James Leppoc Cappel was born in India on 17 Aug 1836, the son of James Leppoc Cappel, and served in the Crimea in 1855-56 attached to the Turkish Contingent.

On returning to India, Cappel joined the Indian Telegraph Service in 1857. Cappel was part of the 1866 project which established the very first Trans-Atlantic telegraph cable. After a series of promotions, Cappel was appointed Director of Telegraph Traffic in 1869.

A member of the St. Stephen's Club, Cappel finally lived at 27 Court Gardens and served on the Institute of Civil Engineers, dying on 20 Apr 1924. He is remembered at Brompton Cemetery.
