A FINE VICTORIAN WARS IN INDIA GROUP AWARDED TO AN OFFICER OF THE 24TH FOOT WHO AFTER BEING SEVERELY AT THE BATTLE OF CHILIANWALA WAS AWARDED A RARE C.B. WHIST STILL A CAPTAIN OF THE 24TH FOOT FOR HIS GALLANTRY IN 1858 AT THE STORMING OF RAMPUR KHASSIA DURING THE INDIAN MUTINY, WHERE WITH “DARING RESOLUTION OF A TRUE SOLDIER, DETERMINED TO STORM THE BASTION”. HE LATER COMMANDED THE 21ST PUNJABIS IN THE JYNTEAH HILLS DURING THE REBELLION OF 1862-6 AND AGAIN DURING THE ABYSSINIAN CAMPAIGN. FINALLY AS BRIGADIER GENERAL DURING THE AFGHAN WAR, COMMANDED THE 2ND BRIGADE OF THE KURRAM FIELD FORCE DURING THE ATTACK ON THE PEIWAR KOTAL, BEING PROMOTED TO MAJOR-GENERAL A YEAR LATER.

John Bulkeley Thelwall was born at Efenechtyd, Denbigh, Wales, on 16 April 1826, son of the Rev. E. Thelwall, Vicar of Llanbedr, Denbighshire. He was first commissioned as Ensign in the 24th Foot on 4 August 1843, and promoted to Lieutenant on 3 April 1846. He served with the 24th Foot grenadier company under captain Travers during the Punjab campaign of 1848-49……………..
