A SCARCE SOUTH AFRICA 1877-9 TO A TROOPER IN FERREIRA’S HORSE

SOUTH AFRICA 1877-9, CLASP 1879 ‘TROOPR R. KEMP, FERREIRA’S HORSE’.

Ferreira’s Horse was raised by Colonel Ignatius Ferreira at Pretoria during the first British occupation of the Transvaal. It later saw active service in the first Sekhukhune war of 1878 and in February 1879. During the Zulu War they saw service around the Transvaal border and during the second Sekhukhune war, they played an important role in the imperial victory, Colonel Ferreira being created a CMG for his services.

201 medals issued to Ferreira’s Horse but 116 returned unissued thus scarce.
