SCINDE MEDAL 1843

SCINDE 1843 MEEANEE HYDERABAD REVERSE TO THE 22ND FOOT

SCINDE 1843, MEEANEE HYDERABAD REVERSE ‘HUGH HANNON. 22ND REGT.’

Hugh Hannon, a 19 year old servant from Tuam, Galway, enlisted into the 22nd foot on 10 Apil 1832. Private Hannon served thoughout the Scinde campaign, taking part in the battles of Meanee and Hyderabad.

Hannon was discharged on 25 April 1854, being unfit for further service and was in possession of the Scinde medal. His conduct is noted as bad, his statement of service listing multiple times between 1832 and 53, being confined as a prisoner. He is noted as being tried by District Court Martial on 9th April 1834 for ‘absence without leave, habitual drunkenness and making away with necessaries’ for which he was sentenced to 6 weeks solitary confinement.

His medical report states on discharge that his poor health was due to climate and military service, not ‘the result of indulgence in the use of intoxicating liquors or other vices as far as is known here.

Condition NVF, overall contact marks and edge bruising. Naming engraved in the correct regimental style, fitted with silver clip and bar suspension. Sold with a fine file of research including service papers, the campaign and the 22nd’s participation in it.

468 medals issued with this reverse, the 22nd being the only British Regiment present.
