A SUPERB 22ND FOOT SCINDE 1843 TO AN OFFICER PROMOTED FROM THE RANKS MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES FOR SERVICE ON GENERAL NAPIER’S STAFF AT THE BATTLE OF MEEANEE AND SEVERELY WOUNDED IN THE JAW BY A MATCHLOCK AT THE BATTLE OF HYDERABAD. HE FURTHER COMMANDED A COMPANY OF THE 22ND DURING THE CAMPAIGN IN THE SOUTHERN MARATHA COUNTRY, 1844-5 AND WAS MENTIONED IN LT COL HARVEY’S, 14TH LIGHT DRAGOON’S DISPATCHES

Mentioned in Major General Napier’s despatch for the battle of Meeanee, 18 February 1843:

“During the action, Lieutenant Brennan was scarcely from my side a moment, except when conveying orders”

Captain Brenan’s statement of service is particularly detailed, giving the following regarding his service:

“Served in the campaign of Scinde as Proverst Marshall to the force under the command of Major General Sir Chas Napier K.C.B., was present at the battle of Meeanee on the 17th February 1843 and assisted in conveying the General’s orders during that day. Was also present at the battle of Hyderabad on the 24th March 1843 and was acting Staff Officer to the Left Brigade commanded by Major Poole, H.M. 22 Regt at that engagement. Served in the Southern Maratha country in 1844-45 under Major General; Dalmott, was present during the investment and capture of Forts Panulla, Tourishurr on 1st Dec 1844, mentioned in Lt Col Harvey’s, 14th Light Dragoon’s Dispatches, who commanded the 3rd Brigade. For vigorously seconding him in cheering on the leading sub division of H.M. 22nd Regt. Was also present at the investment and reduction of the Forts of Munnahur and Munsuntosh in January 1845……………..

Condition VF, correctly engraved, some contact wear, original ribbon and lovely dark patina to both medal and broach bar. A quite superb 22nd Foot Officers Scinde medal.

Sold with a large and comprehensive file of copied research, including extracts from musters, Officers service records, recommendations, gazettes, an ORMS article on the 22nd during the Scinde campaign etc. A roll of Scinde medals to officers and Senior NCO’s, noting previous sales and locations of known medals notes this medal, along with Lieutenant Stopford’s, as Hamilton 1927.
