SOUTH AFRICA 1877-9 TO A TROOPER DURBAN MOUNTED RIFLES

SOUTH AFRICA 1877-9, NO CLASP ‘TR. FISHER DURBAN MD. RIFLES’

Raised in 1875, when it had a strength of two troops of about 50, its strength was 72 by the time of the Zulu War. The Durban Mounted Rifles participated in the action at Inyezane, and upon news of Isandlwana were hastily sent back to Natal. Here they occupied defensive posts on the Natal side of the Tugela river, patrolling and guarding the frontier against possible raids by Zulus. Captain Shepstone, who later commanded Shepstone’s Native Horse, commanded the unit in Pearson’s column.

72 Medals were awarded to the Durban Mounted Rifles, all of them with the '1879' clasp.
