ABYSSINIA 1867 TO A CAPTAIN IN THE 33RD FOOT WHO WAS PRESENT AT THE STORMING AND CAPTURE OF MAGDALA LATER LT COLONEL 8TH FOOT

ABYSSINIA 1867 ‘CAPT. H.G. JERVIS. 33RD D.W. REGT.’

Lt Colonel Edwin Jervis of the 8th Foot served with the 33rd Foot in Abyssinia and the 8th Foot in Afghanistan.

Army List entry “Lt. Colonel Edwin Jervis served with the 33rd Regiment throughout the Abyssinian campaign of 1867-68, and was present at the storming and capture of Magdala (Medal). Served with the 2nd Battalion 8th Foot throughout the Afghan war of 1878 80, and was present at the capture of the Peiwar Kotal, and in the engagement at Ali Kheyl (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp)”.

Born 15 Sept 1840, Pendleton Lancs
Ensign 23 Aug 1859 – 14th Foot
Exchanged to 33rd Foot – 30 Sept 1859
Lieut 22 Jan 1862
Capt 24 Dec 1867
Serving with the 33rd up to 15 Aug 1868 then half pay for 2 years
Joined 8th Foot 23 Nov 1870
Brevet Major 2 Mar 1881
Lt Col Half Pay 18 May 1881

Noted as H G Jervis on medal roll – unattached list – which was Half Pay in Jervis’s case.

Initials ‘H G’ presumably a transcript error on medal roll as no other Captain Jervis. Also note that unattached when medal issued fits perfectly with Captain Edwin Jervis’s service. No ‘H G Jarvis’ on Army list immediately prior to 1867, so again clear the medal roll is incorrect. Thus, medal itself is named correctly according to roll but the roll is in error.

Details of the regiment’s participation in the campaign, in which they took a leading part in the storming of Magdala and for which two VC’s were awarded to men of the regiment, can be found here:

Condition VF, a little contact wear to reverse or better. A good Company Commanders medal to one of the few British Regiments that served during the Abyssinian campaign.
