Gwinn Minter, aged 23, enlisted into Company C, 10th West Virginia Infantry as a Private on 22 November 1861. Promoted Sergeant in March 1862, he reenlisted as a Veteran Volunteer on 29 February 1864 and was commissioned 1st Lieutenant of Company C on 1 November 1864. Having commanded Company C from April 1865, he was confirmed as Captain on 25 July 1865 and mustered out of service in August that year.
During Minter’s service with the 10th West Virginia Infantry, they served in many small engagements in West Virginia 1862-3. They took part in Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign, August – November 1864, including the battles of Opequan, Winchester, Fisher’s Hill and Cedar Creek, where they lost their Colonel. In 1865, the 10th served in the Appomattox Campaign, March 1865 before moving to the Petersburg front where they took part in the battle of Hatchers Run, the assault on and fall of Petersburg 2 April, the pursuit of Lee April and the surrender of Lee and his army at Appomattox Court House, 9 April 1865.
