ASHANTEE 1873, CLASP, COOMASSIE ‘SURGEON, E. MC.CRYSTAL, 1873-4.’
Edward McCrystal was appointed Assistant Surgeon, Staff, on 31 March 1866 and Surgeon, Army Medical Department the same day. During his service he served on the Gold Coast Station and took part in the Ashantee War of 1873-4, including the march on Coomassie. Attaining the rank of Surgeon Major in 1878. He died of disease of the heart at Pembroke Dock on 17 August 1881.
